Welcome to Ms. King's Class 102
Here's What's Going On In Room 231
Reading: We are working on becoming word detectives. We are learning how to solve tricky works and check that our hunches are correct. We recently earned our Word Detective badges. We have also been working on breaking up tricky words that are longer into smaller parts. Finally, we have been learning about unusual words- contractions, compound words, and possessive nouns. Your children have been making wonderful progress in reading.
Fundations: We are learning about base words and the suffix -s. We are listening for base words and writing them in a snap before adding the suffix -s. We learned that the suffix -s can sound like s or z.
Writing: We are writing "How To" pieces. Our goal is to write detailed steps, in order, that teach others how to do the things we know how to do so well. Recently, we started "saying more" about our steps. The children know that they can break a big step up into smaller actions. They can also include tips, warnings, and suggestions.
Math: We are learning strategies for subtracting in a snap. We have learned how to "count back" when we know how much is being taken away. Also, we learned that you can use addition to help you subtract by counting up. Another strategy is "get back to ten, subtract the rest". If you would like any more information on these strategies, I will be happy to meet with you during Parent Engagement time on Tuesdays.
Social Studies: We are learning about Families - members, rules, etc..

A Quick Note
Many parents have sent in notes about DreamBox. Unfortunately, our school no longer has access to this program. If this changes I will let you know.
Please be sure to use MyOn as a resource for books. Your child is required to read for at least 10 minutes a day. MyOn gives them access to books at all times.
We are collecting Box Tops. Please be on the lookout for them. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents for our school.
Our Holiday Show is Friday, December 23rd at 9:30. More information will be sent home soon.
