Here's What's Going On In Room 231
Reading: We are studying ways to get to know our characters. We have been reading lots of Gerald and Piggy books. They are so funny! As we read, we have been paying close attention to our characters' expressions and gestures. We've been tracking their feelings across stories. During partner-time we have been role-playing and making our characters talk and think outside of the story.
Phonics: We have solved the case of silent e!!! We're moving onto making sure we are careful readers. Our next unit will have us looking at blends, inflectional endings (-s, -ed, -ing), and phonograms.
Writing: We have moved into opinion writing. For the last week or so, we've been using our collections to come up with opinions and give reasons to support our opinion. We've also learned that we can make counter-arguments when we disagree. Next week, we'll move on to writing opinion pieces about some of our favorite things!
Math: This week, we are finishing up Topic 5. Topic 5 had us doing very grown-up work. We had to "balance equations". We learned that equations are like a seesaw - we have to have the same amount on both sides of the equal sign. We will continue to work on this for the rest of the year. Our next chapter will be all about data.
Social Studies: We will be studying our community and the people who work in our community!
A Quick Note
- Please be sure to use MyOn as a resource for books. Your child is required to read for at least 10 minutes a day. MyOn gives them access to books at all times.
- We are collecting Box Tops. Please be on the lookout for them. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents for our school.
- Thank you for all your help and hard work at home. One hundred percent of our students were Homework Heroes for the month of September. Unfortunately, we did not have 100% of our students become Homework Heroes in October, November, or December. Let's see if we can achieve 100% in January.
- We are collecting cans for The Souper Bowl ! So far we have collected 72 cans. Let's see if we can make it to 100 cans. Thank you to all the families that have donated so far. Our team, the Saints, is made up of a classes from P. 10 , M.S 101 and P.S. 304. Altogether, the Saints have collected a total of 601 cans.
